Description of Incident:

A suspect was wounded today during a gunfight with BSO deputies responding to a disturbance call at an Oakland Park apartment home.

The disturbance occurred inside apartment 2 at 3951 N.E. 10th Avenue. The suspect, Jose Joya, 26, was attending a party when he became involved in an argument with family and friends in attendance. The others told Joya to leave and dialed 911 to request assistance from the Broward Sheriff's Office. As three deputies arrived at the four-unit apartment building they encountered Joya outside, on the street. Joya drew a semiautomatic handgun and opened fire on the deputies. The three deputies returned fire and Joya was hit several times. None of the deputies, and no other citizens, were hurt.

Joya was transported to Broward General Medical Center and was taken into surgery. He is expected to survive and will face as-yet-undetermined charges in connection with the shooting.

Per standard procedure, the three deputies have been placed on administrative leave and the shooting is under investigation by Oakland Park District 12, as well as the BSO Homicide, Crime Scene and Professional Compliance Units.
