Description of Incident:

Following a horrible car crash in Tamarac, one man is dead and another is clinging to life.

The legs of a 40-year old Lauderdale Lakes man, Oreste Lafontant, were amputated when the car he was standing in front of was violently hit from behind and pushed into the rear of another vehicle parked directly in front of it.

Lafontant was standing between a Nissan pickup truck and a disabled Honda in the area of 4600 NW 31st Ave. around 9:20pm, Monday, December 3, 2001. As Lafontant hooked a towrope to the broken down car, the Honda was hit from behind by a rented, 2002 Lincoln being driven southbound on 31st by 40-year old Marvin Major whose last known address was in Deerfield Beach. The force of the impact sent the front of the Honda into the rear of the Nissan, severing Lafontant’s legs.

After the crash, Major ran about 2 blocks south on 31st Avenue and collapsed. Broward Fire Rescue paramedics worked on Major and transported him to Northridge hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Initial reports from the medical examiner are inconclusive at this point and a definitive cause of death is pending.

Lafontant remains in serious condition at Broward General Medical Center.
