Description of Incident:

A Pompano Beach man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday morning and the search is on to locate the vehicle that fled the scene.

Around 3 a.m. September 1, Jorge Escalante, 29, of Pompano Beach, was crossing the roadway from north to south in the 800 block of West Sample Road when he was struck by a westbound car that failed to stop after striking him. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and BSO deputies responded to the initial call of a person lying in the roadway. On arrival, BSFR pronounced the victim dead on the scene.

BSO Traffic Homicide Unit detectives spent several hours on the scene collecting evidence and processing the scene. Through their on-scene investigation, they were able to develop a suspect vehicle description. Investigators are looking for a 1992 or 1993 Toyota Camry or similar-type vehicle. The car is beige in color and is missing the driver’s side view mirror, which was recovered at the scene. The vehicle also has damage to the driver’s side fender and door.

Anyone with information about the crash or the suspect vehicle should call BSO THI Det. Michael Kelliher at 954-765-4321, or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or online at www.BrowardCrimeStoppers.org.
