Description of Incident:

One man is in custody and one remains at large in connection with the May 16 shooting and robbery outside the Champion Food Store in unincorporated Central Broward.

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested Kevon Obas, 20, on Tuesday, May 21, at his home in Lauderhill without incident.

The May 16 surveillance images from the Champion Food Store, 2409 N.W. 15 Ct., Ft. Lauderdale, show Obas and another man walking westbound on Northwest 15 Court in front of the business around 12:55 a.m. Off camera, two men are playing craps and they spot one of the pedestrians take out a gun as the pair heads toward them. The images show the two victims running away from the suspects as shots are being fired at them. One of the victims, Damian Royer, 25, falls to the ground and the suspects run past him as they chase the second victim. Moments later, a black, two-door Pontiac G6 pulls up next to Royer. A man exits the passenger side of the car, searches through the Royer’s pockets, gets back in the car and they drive away.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported Royer to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition. Doctors say, if he survives, he will likely be a quadriplegic.

The second suspect involved in the shooting is described as a dark skin, black male, chubby, with long dreadlocks covered by a knit hat and was last seen wearing an orange shirt.
