Description of Incident:

An 11-year-old North Lauderdale girl suffered critical injuries when a car struck her on her way to school this morning.

The mishap occurred at about 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Bailey Road and Woodlands Boulevard in North Lauderdale. Brittany Harris and three other children were crossing Bailey Road, heading from north to south, enroute to their bus stop and a ride to Lauderdale Lakes Middle School. Brittany ran into the path of an eastbound 1986 Chrysler LeBaron, driven by Michael Maloney, 39, of Tamarac.

The child sustained a fractured skull and was transported by BSO helicopter to Broward General Medical Center, where she was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit in critical condition. The driver, Maloney, remained on the scene and cooperated with BSO Traffic Homicide detectives investigating the accident.

No charges were filed against the driver and the investigation continues.
