BSO Case Number: OA02-05-562
PIO Number: 02-5-14
Date: May 6, 2002
Place of Occurrence: 6000 NE 9th Avenue, Oakland Park

Victim(s):

  • Drew Raymond Betterly, 12, 10/13/89, 5940 NE 2nd Terrace, Ft. Lauderdale

Description of Incident:

Detectives and deputies from the Broward Sheriff's Office are trying to locate a Ft. Lauderdale boy who never returned home from school.

At about 6:45 the evening of Monday, May 6, 2002, deputies were called to the home of 12-year old Drew Raymond Betterly at 5940 NE 2nd Terrace. Drew’s mother said her son had not come home from school and that he should have been home nearly two hours prior.

Drew is registered at Rickards Middle School in Oakland Park, but is bused to and attends classes at Floranada Elementary School through the 6th grade annex program.

BSO deputies searched the neighborhood and interviewed a couple of Drew’s friends and classmates who said that Drew had indicated that he was not going to go home after school because he was afraid of being disciplined over a note sent home by a teacher.

One of the friends also told deputies that Drew had said he was going to walk along the train tracks just east of North Dixie Highway near 56th Street. That area and others were searched using numerous deputies and a BSO helicopter, yet Drew has not been found.

Drew is a white male, 12-years old, approximately 5-foot-2 inches tall with a husky build, about 125-pounds, straight, short brown hair. He was last seen in the area of Rickards Middle School, 6000 NE 9th Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about Drew Raymond Betterly to contact BSO
at (954) 765-4321.
