BSO’S BURGLARY APPREHENSION TEAM BATS DOWN CRIME

Date: August 7, 2014                                                      PIO Number: 14-8-4

BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team (B.A.T.) investigations trigger a significant drop in residential burglaries. The specialized unit, formed by Sheriff Scott Israel to identify and arrest those responsible for residential burglaries in Broward County, shows its worth in its first five months.

Since its formation in March of this year, B.A.T. has been able to affect a 36% reduction in reported residential burglaries, across all areas served by BSO, from the numbers reported in 2013. B.A.T. detectives rely on tools, such as intelligence-led policing, analytical crime data and surveillance in their investigations. The unit collaborates regularly with other law enforcement agencies on joint investigations. B.A.T. has made numerous felony and misdemeanor arrests for crimes, including burglary, dealing in stolen property, grand theft and grand theft auto. They have also made arrests on active warrants for armed kidnapping, lewd and lascivious molestation and violation of probation for armed robbery.
