Description of Incident:

A man captured on surveillance video stealing a pricey bottle of cognac on New Year’s Eve was found sitting in the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail. Following news reports of the end-of-the-year booze burglary, a Crime Stoppers tip helped identify the suspect.

BSO detectives found Hans Kaiser, 47, at the BSO Main jail facing charges for a Jan. 15 grand theft in the city of Margate.

On Jan. 22, investigators released video of the suspect as he forced open the locked, glass display case that housed a $980 bottle of Hennessy Paradis Extra Rare Cognac at the ABC Wine and Spirits store in Oakland Park. He slid open the case and hid the expensive booze under his clothing before walking out of the store. He didn’t steal any other items.

In an interview with detectives, Kaiser admitted to the crime and told detectives he sold the bottle of cognac for $100. He used the money to support his drug habit.

Kaiser now faces an additional grand theft charge for this crime.
