Description of Incident:

A Fort Lauderdale man, 53-year old Ricardo Gonzalez, was injured when an explosive device blew up in his hand as he walked in the 1100 block of Wyoming Avenue in unincorporated Broward.

The Broward Sheriff's Office was called to the scene at about 7:15 the night of Monday, December 10, 2001. When the first deputy arrived at approximately 7:20 pm, a witness told him he had heard a loud noise, looked out his window, saw something explode in Gonzalez’s hand, and then saw Gonzalez run away.

The deputy saw a canvas bag on the ground nearby and as he approached the bag, Gonzalez appeared and reached for the satchel. The deputy ordered Gonzalez to stop, placed the suspect in the back of the patrol car, called for the BSO bomb squad, and set up a secure perimeter.

Arriving bomb squad investigators discovered two destructive devices inside the bag and detonated them on the scene.

Subsequent investigation led detectives to a nearby home at 733 W. Evanston Circle where Gonzalez reportedly lived out of a dilapidated van, despite the fact that the address listed on his drivers license was 3805 SW 13th Ct., #2, Ft. Lauderdale. Bomb squad investigators were searching the van at the time of this release.

Gonzalez, who did not appear to be too badly injured, was taken to Plantation General Hospital where his condition was not immediately known.

No other injuries were reported.
