Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office robbery detectives are releasing the name of a bank robbery suspect wounded yesterday during the unsuccessful hold up attempt of the People’s National Bank in Lauderdale Lakes.

Twenty-year-old Courtney Haye of 6618 Rio Pinar Drive in North Lauderdale was arrested yesterday after being shot in the hand by a bank security guard while Haye and a cohort tried to pull off a heist.

Sometime around noon on Monday, February 04, 2002, security guard Raul Cruz saw a stolen Dodge van back into a parking space in the bank’s lot at 2412 N. State Road 7. Cruz noticed two men wearing ski masks sitting in the van. He ran from the foyer to the lobby of the bank and told customers and employees to “get down”, then ran back to the foyer, drew his revolver, and took up position behind a desk.

Armed with a handgun, Haye and an unknown man walked into the bank’s foyer and demanded that Cruz hand over his revolver. Fearing for his own safety and the well being of those inside the bank, Cruz opened fire, hitting Haye in the hand and sending both suspects fleeing.

BSO set up a perimeter and after a nearly two hours long search, detectives and K-9 found Haye hiding in a vacant apartment at 2510 N. State Rd. 7, #202 in the nearby Glen Cove complex.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives and the FBI are following up on leads on the second suspect.

No other injuries were reported.

Cruz is employed by Burns Security, 4764 W. Commercial Blvd., Tamarac.
