A safety campaign to increase seat belt usage among children is gaining traction, with the help of America’s newest superhero.

Super Safety Girl is the new ambassador for seat belt education in Broward County. Her costume includes a yellow traffic-patterned shirt, black mask with yellow dashed lines and a seat belt buckle fastened snugly around her waist. The idea for this character was the brainchild of BSFR life safety educators (LSE), after hearing of the tragic deaths of two Broward sisters in a central Florida crash last fall. When the LSEs met with faculty at Park Lakes Elementary - where the two girls attended, they learned the majority of children were not wearing seat belts when being dropped off and picked up at school. Buckle Up Park Lakes! was developed with the goal to increase seat belt usage.

Buckle Up Park Lakes! delivered immediate results and has proven successful again, this time at Meadowbrook Elementary,” Sheriff Scott Israel said. “The intervention from our life safety educators may very well prevent another tragedy.” Buckle Up Meadowbrook! began March 13 with seat belt usage observation at drop-off and pickup. On the first day, 86 children were observed not wearing seatbelts or properly restrained. The observation period was accompanied by safety awareness education for parents and children by firefighters and BSO deputies from central Broward. Warnings were issued for initial non-compliance, with citations issued to drivers of unbuckled children if the deputies noticed repeated scofflaws. There was also in-class delivery of seat belt education and safety-themed contests leading up to the big school-wide safety carnival March 20 to signify the success of the program and reinforce the safety message. Super Safety Girl will be joined by Sheriff Israel and BSO deputies and firefighters for the event. There will be fire and law enforcement vehicle displays, safety-themed games and lots of treats for the Meadowbrook students.
