BSO Awards Ceremony HonorsTurnpike Shooting Victims and Heroes

Several people involved in life-threatening predicaments will be honored by Sheriff Al Lamberti at an award ceremony recognizing the outstanding actions of many BSO members, law enforcement officers and citizens.

Key Biscayne Police Officer Nelia Real, critically wounded last May in a turnpike shooting incident, will receive the Medal of Honor along with Osvaldo Petitfrere, the BSO deputy who saved her life. Three other BSO employees will also be recognized and everyone involved in the turbulent event will attend, along with Key Biscayne Police Chief Charles Press. BSO Detective Rodrigo Mello will also receive the Medal of Honor for his close encounter with a rifle-wielding suspect in a separate incident.

For supporting law enforcement and serving their community, career cops and concerned citizens will be honored in a number of categories, including the Special Recognition award, Department of Justice FBI award, ASIS Law Enforcement award, Samaritan award, Meritorious Service award, Grand Cordon Unit Achievement award, Silver Cross award and Gold Cross award.

In addition to the awards, four deputies will receive promotions during the ceremony at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.
