Broward County Judge Ginger Lerner-Wren and Sheriff Al Lamberti are announcing the launch of a new program designed to reduce recidivism and lower jail costs while promoting public safety.
The Revival Project (Reentry Virtual Initiative and Values Applied Learning) was developed by Judge Lerner-Wren, pioneer of the first Mental Health Court in the United States, in collaboration with Nova Southeastern University.
“To me, this project is a logical extension of our work in release planning and jail diversion that we’ve been doing in the Mental Health Court for over 15 years,” Judge Lerner-Wren said. “I am grateful to the sheriff for his leadership in taking discharge planning in corrections to the next level in Broward County.”
According to the Pew Center’s most recent study, rates of recidivism in the U.S. are presently estimated at 43%. Studies reveal a revolving door to incarceration where four of every 10 individuals released from prison return within three years. States are struggling to find strategies to reduce corrections spending. “It’s a complex problem,” said Judge Lerner-Wren. “But according to the Rand Corporation’s most recent report on reentry, outcomes improve where there is pre-release planning.”
According to Sheriff Lamberti, “It makes sense to have people prepared and ready to reenter our community with new strategies and skills. For those ready to take responsibility and who want to rebuild their lives, I am pleased to make this program available.”
The sheriff will be implementing The Revival Project within the next few weeks and looks forward to working with the community to help those who are committed to being law abiding citizens.
