BSO DEPUTY ARRESTED

BSO Case Number: 16-1012-000052
PIO Number: 12-7-11
Date: July 14, 2012
Time:
Place of Occurrence: 10700 Stirling Road, Cooper City
Jurisdiction: Cooper City

Victim(s):

  • State of Florida
  • Mark Visconti, 4/19/93, male, current address unavailable

Suspect(s):

  • Gerald Wengert, 33, male, address exempt

Description of Incident:

A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested today on a warrant charging him with battery, falsifying records and official misconduct.

Gerald Wengert was booked at the Broward County Jail, pending the posting of $2,000 bond. He was immediately suspended without pay.

Wengert, assigned to BSO’s K-9 unit, was charged in connection with a December 2010 traffic stop in which he arrested Mark Visconti, then 17 years old, on charges of resisting arrest and battery on a law enforcement officer. A thorough investigation by BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit indicates that Wengert acted inappropriately.

“When we get a complaint, or there is some sign of wrongdoing, we investigate and take action if policies were violated or laws were broken,” Sheriff Al Lamberti said. “It bothers me that we have nearly 6,000 dedicated employees doing the right thing every day and people hear more about the mistakes and misdeeds of a few. But regardless of the effect, we are not going to sweep anything under the rug.”

The arrest warrant and Wengert’s mug shot are attached to this news release at www.sheriff.org.
