Description of Incident:

The 27-year-old suspect who shot and killed a man at a gas station Sunday afternoon in Lauderdale Lakes also carjacked a woman in the presence of her three children and attempted to run over a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Just after 2 p.m., BSO deputies were dispatched to a call of shots fired at the Citgo gas station at 4449 N. State Road 7 in Lauderdale Lakes. The victim, Kemar Austin, 29, had pulled into the gas station and was sitting in his parked car. The suspect, Dwayne Dyer, walked up to Austin’s vehicle and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene in a Toyota.

The wounded victim drove south on State Road 7 for about 10 blocks, coming to a stop after careening into the median in the 3400 block of North State Road 7. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue airlifted Austin to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A witness to the shooting gave deputies a description of the vehicle and the license plate number. Deputies went to the car owner’s residence to speak with occupants of the home. The car belonged to Dyer’s girlfriend’s mother. Dyer spotted the approaching units and fled on foot. As he fled, he spotted a woman and her three kids in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Dyer jumped in the woman’s car and drove off. The carjacking victim reported the incident and deputies issued a B.O.L.O. of the car’s description and tag number.

A deputy in Lauderdale Lakes spotted the vehicle heading southbound on State Road 7 near the Boulevard of Champions and walked onto the roadway, ordering the driver to stop. Dyer accelerated toward the deputy, making him jump out of the path of the vehicle in order to avoid injury. The suspect continued southbound on State Road 7 for a short distance before crashing and fleeing on foot. After a short foot pursuit, Dyer was taken into custody.

Detectives have not found a connection between the victim and the suspect and believe robbery could have been the motive behind the shooting. Dyer has been booked into the BSO Main Jail facing charges of first degree murder, carjacking and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
