Description of Incident:

Before being nabbed by BSO deputies today, two brazen thieves in a stolen rental truck caused four traffic crashes as they recklessly fled from the scene of their crime.

Shortly before 11 a.m. the operator of a truck repair shop at 480 S.W. 9th Terrace noticed that a Penske rental truck was backed up to his garage bay and two men were loading brand new truck tires into the vehicle. The victim climbed onto the truck, trying to get his tires back. He said it appeared that one man had a gun, so he jumped out of the truck and ran to a phone to call 911, summoning help from BSO.

A few minutes later, a BSO deputy driving on Commercial Boulevard near Executive Airport, heard the BOLO for the truck, which the 911 caller said was fleeing an “armed robbery.” The deputy activated his lights and siren but the Penske truck refused to stop. A second BSO unit joined the pursuit that went east on Commercial, south on 15th Avenue, onto Powerline Road, and south on 21st Avenue. Three crashes in the area of Oakland Park Boulevard were caused when cars swerved to avoid the fleeing truck. None of the drivers were seriously injured.

As the Penske truck headed south on NW 21st Avenue Alfred Mallard, 62, was eastbound on 26th Street, making a left turn to head north on 21st. Mallard’s 1985 Mitsubishi pickup truck collided with the Penske truck, causing it to overturn. Two suspects exited the overturned rig and began to flee, running to Osswald Park where deputies quickly captured them.

Mallard and the suspect driver were taken to Broward General Medical Center for treatment of relatively minor injuries.

The Penske truck, carrying five of the hot truck tires, was reported stolen August 3rd in Pompano Beach. Neither suspect carried identification and detectives will verify their names before they can bond out of jail, but the driver claims to be Ronald Gibbs, 32, and his cohort claims to be Steven Moore, 38, both of Miami. Both men were charged with Armed Burglary, Possession of Stolen Property, Grand Theft and (felony) Fleeing and Eluding.
