Description of Incident:

A Miramar man lost his life after his car crashed into a western Broward canal late Saturday evening.

Just before 11:45 p.m. Saturday, a 2003 Cadillac DTS, driven by Joseph Eugene Livolsi, 28, of Miramar, was southbound on U. S, Highway 27, about one-half mile north of Griffin Road, when he lost control of the car. Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit investigators have determined the vehicle first veered off the roadway into the east median. The driver apparently overcorrected, causing the car to veer back onto the roadway, over a guardrail, through bushes and into a canal on the west side of the highway.

First arriving BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue personnel entered the water, broke a window on the submerged vehicle and rescued the driver. Despite resuscitative efforts on scene and en route to the hospital via Davie Fire Rescue, Livolsi was pronounced dead at Cleveland Clinic in Weston.

Rescue divers continued the search of the canal and were assisted by BSO Air Rescue overhead and firefighters on the ground, who combed the canal banks in an extensive search for any possible additional victims until it was determined that Livolsi was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
