Description of Incident:

She was 25 and pretty. She told him she loved him and wanted to travel the world with him. Then she started borrowing his money.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Unit detectives are looking for a woman they say is an adept scam artist who ripped off a then-85-year-old Pompano Beach man, leaving him destitute. They have identified the suspect as then-25-year-old Gina Marks of Boca Raton. Detectives say Marks befriended Clifford Rogerson around Nov. 30, 2012 at a Pompano Beach Walgreens. He loaned her $1 when she was short at the register. She asked for his name and phone number, and their relationship began.

The two held hands, kissed and regularly dined together. He began lending her money, which Marks promised to repay in February after the sale of her father’s business. But when his retirement account dissipated, she disappeared. He last heard from her in mid-February 2013, when she called from a blocked number and told him she no longer had a cell phone. Over the course of three months, he lent her more than $20,000. Rogerson reported the crime to BSO in May 2013.

Marks faces charges of grand theft and exploitation of the elderly. She is approximately 5-foot-5 and weighs about 115 pounds. She may have a school-age child.

Anyone with information about Gina Marks can contact Det. Scott Stone at 954-321-4255 or report anonymous tips to Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or to online. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
