Description of Incident:
A fumbling crook is quickly captured after video of he and his partner is rebroadcast.
On Friday, January 4, 2002, south Florida media re-ran surveillance video of a pair of television thieves in action. By the morning of Monday, January 07, 2002, one of the bird-brained burglars was in custody.
In November and December of last year, two men were videotaped pilfering TV’s on separate occasions from the same K-Mart in Pompano Beach.
After the story of the TV thieves aired late last December, a caller to Broward Crime Stoppers told investigators that one of the crooks was 46-year old Richard “Droppie” Gordon of Opa Locka. Area TV stations re-ran the surveillance video last Friday and helped get the word out that BSO detectives were looking for Gordon.
On Monday morning, a tipster called Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers, told investigators that Gordon had seen his own mug on the news, knew he was being tracked, and needed money to go back to his native Jamaica. That tipster also told detectives where to find “Droppie”.
Within an hour, police were putting handcuffs on Gordon at a fast food restaurant in the 2600 block of Biscayne Blvd. in Miami.
Gordon has been arrested twice in Broward County on grand theft charges. His latest bout of stealing will likely lead him to a lengthy stint in a Florida prison.
BSO detectives are still looking for Gordon’s accomplice in the TV thefts.
