Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide detectives have determined the type of vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Lauderdale Lakes last Thursday.

Detectives still want to find the hit-and-run driver and are asking for help from the public.
Through their investigation, and the use of bits of wreckage left on the scene, investigators have determined that the hit-and-run vehicle was a 1999 or 2000 silver Hyundai Elantra.

Deputies were dispatched to the 4300 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard at about 3:30 a.m. (10/11/01) after a passerby noticed a motionless body lying near a bus stop. Arriving deputies and paramedics determined that the man was dead. An examination by the medical examiner later confirmed that Jose Echeverria, 64, died of injuries sustained when he was struck by a motor vehicle.

Echeverria was reported missing by his wife at about 11 p.m. Thursday. He had left their Lauderdale Lakes home to walk to a convenience store and never returned.

Anyone with information regarding a late model silver Hyundai Elantra is urged to call the Broward Sheriff's Office at 765-4321 or CrimeStoppers, anonymously, at 493-TIPS. Detectives will determine whether the car was involved in the fatal crash.
