Description of Incident:
Just before 10 a.m., Jimmy Jones, 60, drove his 1994 Ford Ranger truck into the Middle River Canal near the intersection of N.W. 31st Avenue and N.W. 39th Street in Lauderdale Lakes. Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating.
The driver was traveling westbound on N.W. 39th Street approaching N.W. 31st Avenue when his pickup turned left sharply and crossed over the eastbound lanes and into the grass swale along the south side of the street. The truck veered south through the swale and into the Middle River Canal.
Witnesses saw the driver escape the truck and struggle to swim back toward the embankment. The driver was unable to reach the shoreline and slipped beneath the surface of the water. A Good Samaritan jumped into the canal in an attempt to rescue the driver but was unable to do so.
Members of BSO’s Dive Team Unit recovered the driver’s body. He was transported to Broward Health Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 10:46 a.m.
No evidence or witness statements indicate that any other vehicles were involved in the incident. Detectives believe a medical event may have been the cause of the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact BSO Traffic Homicide Investigator Det. Michael Wiley at 954-321-4840.
