The Broward Sheriff’s Office earned the rare Triple Crown award last week at the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) Conference in Nashville. The award was established in 1993 by the NSA to recognize those sheriff's offices that achieve simultaneous accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, the American Correctional Association's Commission on Accreditation for Corrections and the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare.

Only 35 sheriff’s offices of 3,079 sheriff’s offices in the United States have received the Triple Crown. It is the second time BSO has earned Triple Crown recognition from the NSA, one of only seven sheriff’s offices nationwide to earn the distinction twice.

“Achieving any one of these accreditations would be an outstanding feat,” Sheriff Al Lamberti said. “Earning all three at the same time is really remarkable. It goes to show that the Broward Sheriff’s Office is one of the best agencies anywhere, and I am proud of everyone at BSO who helped us win the Triple Crown.”

The Triple Crown designation recognizes those departments that demonstrate outstanding commitment to public safety, security, well-being of jail inmates and efficient agency business practices. It represents the department’s acceptance of the obligation to continue the quest for professional excellence by requiring the Sheriff’s Office to follow hundreds of best practice procedures and constantly document, analyze and review those practices in the daily operations of the agency.
