Description of Incident:

A man who set fire to his ex-fiancée’s business became a victim after he sustained fatal burn injuries.

Just after 7 p.m. Sunday, an eastbound motorist driving in the 5700 block of Hallandale Beach Boulevard saw smoke pouring from a business on the south side of the road. The driver doubled back to investigate and saw a black Pontiac leaving the scene. First-arriving Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue units encountered heavy smoke coming from the one-story structure and extensive fire inside. Firefighters made a quick knockdown on the two-alarm fire and contained the damage to one of the two commercial units.

Broward Sheriff Fire Marshal’s Bureau inspectors and State Fire Marshal’s Office detectives responded to the scene and began a cause and origin investigation. State Fire Marshal Arson Detection Dog Ember hit on two locations in the building, indicating the presence of accelerants. Investigators took samples from the rubble and discovered evidence at the scene indicating someone was likely burned in the fire. They determined that the business owner, Jennifer Tanner, 26, received a phone call advising her ex-fiancé, Luis Evans, showed up at a friend’s house in Miami, severely burned. Evans was transported by Miami Fire Rescue to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he died Monday. The 2008 Pontiac Evans was driving was impounded by the Miami Police Department. State Fire Marshal’s investigators are obtaining a search warrant to process the vehicle for additional evidence. The investigation is ongoing.
