Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff's Office homicide detectives have arrested the husband of Hollywood Hills High School teacher for her murder.

Maxwell McCord, 35, was arrested late Sunday afternoon at the Ron Cochran Public Safety Building before he was transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he is being held withheld bond. McCord faces one charge of first-degree murder.

Based on sufficient evidence, BSO homicide detectives were able to obtain a warrant for McCord’s arrest. McCord agreed to talk with detectives at BSO headquarters Sunday but would not admit to killing his wife, 31-year-old Marie Noguera. McCord told detectives he had been advised by his attorney not to answer any further questions.

Based on their investigation, BSO homicide detectives believe McCord and his wife had dinner around 6:30 Thursday night. Following dinner, the couple went to an upstairs study where McCord physically attacked his wife before strangling her. The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office said the cause of death was blunt trauma and ligature strangulation and the manner was homicide.

In his initial report, McCord told deputies he and his wife and their 3-year-old daughter, Andrea McCord, had dinner at their Weston home around 6:30 Thursday night before going to Broward Mall to go shopping. McCord said his wife forgot her wallet and went back home to get it while he and Andrea stayed at the mall. After the mall closed and he couldn’t find his wife, McCord said he contacted mall security and checked the parking lot for his wife’s 2001 Mazda Tribute Station wagon, which was recovered by BSO homicide investigators about 12:30 Friday afternoon located across the street from Broward Mall. McCord said he and his daughter took a taxicab home after he couldn’t find his wife.

McCord claims once he arrived at his Weston home, located at 1146 Areca Way, he went upstairs around 11:30 Thursday night and discovered his wife’s body and called 911. Detectives are still investigating the motive.

MEDIA NOTE: HOMICIDE DETECTIVES HAVE SEALED THE ARREST AVADAVIT TO THE WARRANT. NO OTHER DETAILS OF NOGUERA’S MURDER ARE AVAILABLE.

INVESTIGATORS: Lt. Reilly & Sgt. Carr and PIO Veda Coleman-Wright
