The Aircraft Owners & Pilots’ Association (AOPA) will kick off its annual conference this week with a parade of more than 60 airplanes. The “Parade of Planes” will taxi along (about 15 mph) various state and city roads from the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport at Griffin Road to the Broward County Convention Center in Port Everglades. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is asking motorists to avoid the area or expect delays, traffic detours, and road closures.
Law enforcement officers from Broward Sheriff’s Office, Fort Lauderdale Police Department, and the Florida Highway Patrol will escort the planes along the four-mile parade route starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 7th. The parade will travel eastbound on Griffin Road and proceed northbound on Federal Highway. Motorists traveling east on Griffin will be stopped or turned at Interstate 95. No westbound traffic will be allowed on Perimeter Road at the Jug Handle intersection. All traffic leaving the airport will be forced to travel westbound on I-595, and all southbound traffic on Federal Highway will be stopped at SE 17th Street Causeway. Vehicles exiting I-595 to southbound Federal Highway will be stopped at Griffin Road until the parade has completed travel through that intersection.
The parade will continue north on Federal Highway to SE 17th Street Causeway, east to Eisenhower Boulevard then south to the Convention Center. The parade is expected to last approximately two hours.
At the conclusion of the conference on Saturday, November 10th, the planes will leave the Convention Center at 3 p.m. in a similar operation and proceed back to the airport. Expect delays at the same roadway closings and seek alternate routes.
