Description of Incident:
A hit and run driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in Oakland Park Tuesday morning is in custody, thanks in part to TV reports asking for the public’s help in finding the suspect vehicle. Also this evening, investigators have determined the identity of the victim and notified her family after searching all day.
An anonymous tipster called detectives around 2 p.m. Tuesday with information about the crash. That tip led BSO traffic homicide investigators to an Oakland Park address at 4331 NE 15 Ter., where they located the suspect vehicle from the early morning crash. After interviewing the car’s owner, who cooperated with detectives, they then interviewed Tyler Burdhimo, 18, of Pompano Beach who was taken into custody.
Around 6:30 a.m., Maria Konstantinidis, 75, was walking along the south side of Northeast 45 Street, known as Floranada Road to the locals, between 15 Terrace and 15 Way, when she was struck by an eastbound car. The vehicle fled the scene after hitting her, turning south on Northeast 15 Way. The critically injured woman was taken to Broward General Medical Center where she died at 8:35 a.m.
BSO Traffic Homicide Unit investigators were able to determine that the suspect vehicle was a four-door Nissan Altima that sustained front end damage. The Nissan emblem from the vehicle’s grille was recovered at the scene.
Burdhimo, who did not have a driver’s license, was booked into the BSO Main Jail late Tuesday night where he faces one count each of leaving the scene of a crash involving a fatality and no valid driver’s license with death.
Anyone with information about this case, or other witnesses to the crash, should call BSO Traffic Homicide Unit Detective Mike Wiley at 954.321.4840 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954.493.TIPS (8477).
