  • David Barton, 17, male, 8/13/96, 131 Edmund Road, West Park (IN CUSTODY)

Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives arrested a teenager for shooting at a group of students congregating Friday morning at a school bus stop in Pembroke Park.

The suspect, David Barton, 17, was attempting to shoot at a boy who was walking toward the bus stop behind Makeda Elliott, 17.  At least four shots were fired, one of which grazed Elliott in the neck.

The shooting happened on Southwest 52 Avenue, south of Hallandale Beach Boulevard and just past Watkins Elementary School. Luckily the elementary school had not yet opened for the school day at the time of the incident.

About a dozen other teens scrambled as they heard the shots fired just after 6:30 a.m.  Elliott called her dad to notify him of the incident and her father transported her to Jackson North Medical Center in Dade County.  Elliott was then taken to Ryder Trauma Center where she was treated and released.

Violent Crimes detectives  went to Hallandale High School to speak with potential witnesses.  Evidence located on the scene and witness statements helped detectives zero in on Barton as the suspect .    Barton was taken into custody at the school and will face charges of premeditated attempted murder, felony murder and shooting at an occupied dwelling.

No one else was injured.

The investigation continues.

Anyone who was in the area or has any information about the shooting is asked to contact BSO Violent Crimes Detective Timothy Metz at 954-321-4224 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-TIPS (8477).  A reward of up to $3,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.
