Suspect(s): Juan Santos, 27, male, 12/1/89, 4200 N.W. 34th St., No. 223, Lauderdale Lakes (IN CUSTODY)

Description of Incident:

A mother left her 6-month-old daughter in the care of a roommate on an October afternoon and about an hour later the infant was in distress. On Wednesday, Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives arrested Juan Santos in the child’s death.

The incident was first reported around 5:20 p.m. Oct. 24 as a call for help for an unresponsive child at 3351 N.E. Fifth Ave., Apt. D in Pompano Beach. At the time, Santos was living in the apartment. Makenzie Nevarez was taken by Pompano Beach Fire Rescue to Broward Health North and then by helicopter to Broward Health Medical Center where she was placed on a ventilator. She died four days later on Oct. 28. Detectives learned that Santos had struck the baby’s head against a wooden bed post.

Santos, who was babysitting Makenzie on that fateful day, faces a murder charge. Makenzie’s initial injuries triggered a visit by BSO’s Child Protective Investigations Section, and two other children were removed from the home. Those children remain with family members.
