Just in time for the holidays, the Broward Sheriff’s Office sent out dozens of teams of law enforcement officers to visit hundreds of homes throughout the county delivering a message to wanted felons: Wake up! You’re going to jail!

Operation Bad Santa brought together BSO deputies, along with officers from Fort Lauderdale, Sunrise, Plantation, Hallandale, Margate, Coral Springs and Coconut Creek police departments and agents from DEA, FBI, State Probation and Parole and the U.S. Marshals Service. Divided in groups of three, the teams combed through the streets of Broward County attempting to serve hundreds of active warrants, ranging from violent felonies to misdemeanor violations, juvenile pick-up orders and writs of bodily attachment for unpaid child support.

“We have thousands of active warrants in our county, and it is my responsibility to be diligent in serving and apprehending these suspects,” Sheriff Scott Israel said.

Regional responses like this one emphasize the importance of interoffice cooperation by unifying our crime suppression efforts with that of our local, state and federal partners while sharing resources with one goal in mind.

In total, the teams attempted to serve more than 300 warrants and located 55 suspects.

“I’m proud of our results and steadfast in our message,” said Israel. “With the holidays right around the corner, criminals need to know that while they’re out looking for their next victim, we’re out looking for them.”

Operation Bad Santa is part of BSO’s holiday enforcement, which began just before Thanksgiving with Operation Full Blitz, and will carry into the new year.
