Description of Incident:
Detectives and deputies from the Broward Sheriff's Office have located a Ft. Lauderdale boy who had been missing since Monday evening.
Shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 08, 2002, Angela Novotny of 320 SE 11th Avenue in Pompano Beach saw 12-year old Drew Raymond Betterly walking near Rickards Middle School in the 6000 block of NE 9th Avenue, Oakland Park. Ms. Novotny picked up Drew and drove him to his home.
Drew was reported missing by his mother just before 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2002 after the boy failed to return home from school.
Concerned for Drew’s safety, the Broward Sheriff's Office utilized numerous detectives, deputies, and resources in a massive search for the boy.
Although early indications are that Drew didn’t come home on Monday because he was concerned about a note to his parents from a teacher, the child is being interviewed in order to determine exactly why he ran away. Additionally, detectives want to know where he went, where he spent the night, and that he’s okay.
