Description of Incident:
Lauderhill Fire Rescue paramedics made a valiant effort to rescue an elderly woman after her car was found in a Tamarac canal Tuesday afternoon, but their efforts proved futile as she was pronounced dead on the scene.
Just after 5 p.m., a 911 caller notified Broward Sheriff’s Office Communications about the incident. The BSO Dive Team searched the murky waters but did not locate anyone else. Ninety-three-year old Lillian Sornik was the sole occupant of the Kia that, for unknown reasons, veered out of the eastbound lanes of Bailey Road in the 5500 block, ending up submerged in the canal. BSO traffic homicide investigators determined through evidence on scene that this is a single-vehicle incident.
Sornik’s body was transported to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Traffic Homicide Detective Mike Kelliher at 954-321-4840 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
