BSO IDENTIFIES BEARDED THIEF WHO TOOK CUSTOMER’S WALLET
Date: Aug. 10, 2017 PIO Number: 17-8-7a
Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives have identified the man who stole a customer’s wallet while the two waited in line at an Oakland Park convenience store.
Christopher Martinez, 33, of Tamarac on Thursday was given a notice to appear in court. He faces a charge of petit theft for taking the victim’s wallet.
The theft, captured on surveillance video, happened around 4 p.m. July 7 at the Mobil gas station at 901 W. Oakland Park Blvd. The victim had placed his wallet and merchandise on the counter. When it was his turn to pay, he grabbed the items and left behind his money. That’s when Martinez, who was standing behind him, swiped the wallet.
Detectives say as the victim and other customers looked for his wallet, Martinez stood by unmoved. The suspect even remained in the store to buy a sports drink. The victim later found out that two unauthorized transactions were made with his missing debit card.
The video was released to the media on Aug. 7, and Martinez saw himself in the news reports. His lawyer contacted BSO deputies to arrange his surrender.
