Battalion Chief Richard Korte

August 16, 1951 - October 3, 1999

Battalion Chief Richard Korte was born on August 16, 1951, in Pompano Beach, Florida. He attended Broadview Elementary and Middle Schools, and completed his formal education at Fort Lauderdale High School. Soon after high school, Rick worked for the City of Lauderhill Public Works Department. Around the same tine, the City of Lauderhill Fire Department was coming into being. Since Rick was already a volunteer “fireman” for the department, he decided to apply for the position, and in turn was the second fully-paid firefighter hired for the newly formed Lauderhill Fire Department in 1971. Through the years, Chief Korte rose to become the departments Assistant Fire Chief until his retirement in April of 1997. During his 26 year tenure with the Lauderhill Fire Department, Chief Korte also served as the department’s Fire Marshal.

At Broward county Fire-Rescue, Chief Korte was responsible for managing the Construction and Engineering Section of the Fire Marshal’s Office. In almost 30 years as a fire-rescue employee, Chief Korte became known as an expert in fire safety and fire codes. He was a member of the Broward County Fire Chiefs Association and was one of the members that developed the South Florida Fire Prevention Code, Broward County Edition in 1988. This code was used as a basis for many of the statewide amendments adopted in the Florida Fire Prevention Code, which is in effect today.

Chief Korte was a member of the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals for many years. He was past president of the Broward County Fire Inspectors Association, for which there is an annual award named after him in his honor called, “The Richard J. Korte Fire Inspector of the Year Award.” He was a member of the Florida Fire Marshal’s Association, The Broward County Fire Marshal’s Committee, member of the Fire Codes and Standards Committee of Broward County, and was instrumental in setting up the Fire Rescue Communications Users Group. He was also appointed as a member of numerous committees in the City of Lauderhill and Broward County throughout his career.

Chief Korte loved his job with the Fire Department, second only to his family whom he adored. He passed away on October 3, 1999 at the age of 48.
