Inmate Work Unit

Broward County inmates convicted of non-violent offenses including traffic violations, minor drug charges and civil infractions, may provide labor for publicly funded and non-profit organizations within the county. These Inmate Work Units, comprised of male inmates from the Stockade Facility and female inmates from the Sheriff's North Jail, participate in community-wide improvement projects including beach clean-ups, playground construction, removal of road debris, drain cleaning and other tasks.

Inmates in the units have an average sentence of less than 180 days, are considered low escape-risks, and must pre-qualify by having:

  • appropriate medical clearance
  • no prior escape record
  • the ability to lift at least 50 pounds
  • state and national warrant clearances

Inmates work in groups of four to nine, supervised by a BSO deputy. It's estimated that BSO's inmate work units save Broward taxpayers more than $1.2 million each year.
