Incorporated in 1963, Tamarac covers approximately 12 square miles located in Central Broward County. Tamarac has a diverse population of 58,000 with a large segment of senior citizens. The city's projected population at build-out is more than 60,000. Tamarac boasts six city parks, seven golf courses, a marina and 300 acres of fresh water canals and lakes.

Tamarac is home to many residential and commercial areas including family and adult neighborhoods, condominiums, apartment complexes, Tamarac Elementary School, Challenger Elementary School, Millennium Middle School, University Hospital and the Tamarac Commerce Park. The district also serves a noncontiguous unincorporated area including the communities of Twin Lakes and Prospect Park and several business areas.

The district has an annual operating budget of approximately $9.7 million and provides for 90 positions including a district chief, two lieutenant, eight sergeants, 63 deputies and other positions.

BSO's Citizen Observer Patrol, or COP, Program is a volunteer group sponsored by the Sheriff's Office that uses a simple approach to safeguarding neighborhoods through residents' involvement. COP volunteers are local residents who help BSO fight crime by patrolling their community, looking out for suspicious activity or potential hazards and offering assistance to local residents.

Typical assignments in addition to patrol activities include performing checks on unoccupied residences (at the owner's request), checking on elderly or homebound residents (as requested) and reporting potential problems and neighborhood hazards to BSO.

COP volunteers wear uniforms and drive specially marked vehicles, adding to the crime-fighting presence in the community.

The COP program in Tamarac currently has approximately 700 registered members. Recently, COP members from the Faircrest 14 sub-division were provided with a new COP patrol vehicle, sporting BSO’s new COP logo scheme. Anyone wishing to join the BSO-Tamarac COP should contact Deputy Brad Miller or Deputy Carl Fitzgerald (954) 720-2239.
