By Rebecca's Parents
The joy and excitement of having a newborn are the most cherished moments in a couple's life. When you are faced with having a child that has many serious medical issues and complications, the joy becomes a constant worry of when you will need to dial 911 for emergency medical assistance.
Having to care for a medically fragile special needs child is very challenging in itself. Having to deal with medical emergencies can be incredibly overwhelming and is something that a parent or caregiver should be well prepared for.
Shortly following Rebecca's arrival home from the hospital, our expectations and enjoyment of being new parents a second time rapidly changed and life as we knew it would never be the same… and that's when our calls to 911 began.
Each time we had to call 911, our hearts dropped and our anguish began, counting the minutes for the paramedics to arrive. There we were, trying to keep our child alive performing *CPR. Those minutes seemed to be the longest minutes any parent can face.
In our case we became numb. We were not thinking rationally and everything seemed to be moving in slow motion. There's your child, breathless, blue, having a seizure, and all you can think about is the EMT's coming through your door. Once help arrives, it's up to the parent or caregiver to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding the child's medical history. The information provided is then used for rapid decision making so that the child can be assessed as quickly as possible, treated, stabilized and readied for transport. Unfortunately, during this fast moving and critical time it may be difficult for most people to provide complete and accurate information regarding the child's medical history as well as other important information that may be crucial for immediate care… This is the reason the BECCA Program was created!
The BECCA Program provides parents and caregivers a tool to store the most accurate up-to-date information regarding their child's medical history and other critical information. This way, if a parent or caregiver is faced with a situation where 911 is called and medical assistance is necessary, there would be no concern about giving the wrong information to paramedics. Simply present your previously completed BECCA Program form to the medical professionals when they arrive and feel confident knowing that they will have all the important medical details concerning your loved ones. The BECCA Program form was created by EMT's for EMT's to treat medically involved children… from the most basic to the most complex cases utilizing up to date medical information.
The BECCA Program is not only for parents and caregivers, but it can also be a valuable tool for...
- Organizations that provide services for children
As well as anyone who feels they could benefit from it!
